Security

Security is a primary concern for NMSU administrators and should be a primary concern for  all members of NMSU's community of users. Information and Communication Technologies has formed a security team that keeps out thousands of viruses that try to attack the NMSU network. It is important for you to make sure you do your part to protect your computer from attacks by keeping updates current, installing antivirus software, cleaning off viruses as soon as they appear and by making sure you know and understand NMSU's Internet use policies.

Policies

It is important to know what is expected of you and what regulations you must follow. Listed below are policies that effect the way you should interact with the NMSU network.

Personal Information Rights

It is important to both you and us that your personal information is protected. We want you to be aware of the ICT policies regarding your personal information, such as when someone other than yourself can access your account.

Virtual Private Network

New Mexico State University users can download and install VPN software to create a secure, encrypted connection between a remote computer and the NMSU campus network. The following clients are supported by ICT and can be used to connect to NMSU's VPN. If you need assistance or have questions, you may contact the ICT Helpdesk at 575 646-1840.

Spyware and Viruses

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user (wikipedia). Viruses can access your email account and using the accounts you have stored there, spread itself to those accounts.

Spyware and viruses can be responsible for slowing down your computer and causing problems for other users on the network.  Spyware, also known as Adware, is a software application that has the ability to take partial control over a user's computer. The program gathers your personal information and shares it with advertising companies and others.

In addition to keeping abreast of software updates, it is important to keep antivirus software on your computer. Viruses cannot only harm your computer, they can attack a whole network of people. It is vital that once your computer is infected with a virus you take immediate steps to remove it.
